Digiscoping is combining a bird watchers spotting scope with a digital camera to allow images to be taken at high magnifications, enabling high quality pictures without disturbing the birds.

Example:

The Picture above shows a scene over some marshland, no birds are visible but there is a large flock of waders on the far bank. This picture was taken using a Nikon Coolpix 4500 at its wide angle setting (Zoomed right out).


This picture was taken with the Nikon Coolpix 4500 at full zoom (4X) the waders are now visible.

This photograph was taken using the Nikon Coolpix 4500 fixed to a Swarovski ST80ST Telescope with the zoom eye piece set at 20X

This photograph was taken using the Nikon Coolpix 4500 fixed to a Swarovski ST80ST Telescope with the zoom eye piece set at 40X

 

Though a little quality has been sacrificed this pictures was taken at full zoom (60x) on the scope, and full zoom (4x) on the Coolpix and is un-croped. It demonstrates the results that can be achieved with this sort of setup and extreme magnifications.
